I need to have a record of when a session is closed because the user left the web. In other words, I need to know how long a person was actually online.

I would like to try to answer your question but I'm not sure which one of our extensions you're getting at.
Could you let me know what extension you would like to use and in what configuration you'll be using it?

Thank you.

The FoolLog component will log when a user has logged in and logged out. When a user closes the browser it will not be registered by the component.

This is because the component will monitor Joomla! events. You can read the documentation online for the FoolLog component to know what is logged (see page What is logged? )
